June, Juuls, and Double Jeopardy

School is coming to an end, and summer break for our kids is just around the corner. Whether you’re driving to work, out for a stroll, or taking your kids to summer camp, it is important to keep in my mind there will be more kids out and about! With that in mind, we must think about their safety as well.

A recent article published by the American Dental Association reflected on the use of e-cigarettes. From 2017-2018, there has been a 78% increase in high schoolers using e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are different from cigarettes in that they do not burn tobacco. Instead, they have a battery that heats up a liquid, creating the fine mist or aerosol that is inhaled. New research being conducted validates that these can contain particles known to cause cancer, and lung diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, the FDA is now aware of increased reports that the youth and young adults have been experiencing seizures with the use of e-cigarettes. They are currently looking into a direct cause.

As for your dental health, there are several concerns in using these e-cigarettes.

  1. Increased risk of developing severe gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss.
  2. Thousands of reports of exploding e-cigarettes. Self-explanatory – damage to face, lips, mouth, teeth, etc.

We are only at the tip of the iceberg on research involving e-cigarettes, and it is clear there are pretty severe risks. Try talking with your kids, or consider the risks yourself if you are following suit in this new trend. If it is a nicotine addiction that you are fighting, the doctor’s here at O’Leary Dental are willing to help. Schedule your visit now, and we can begin working towards a healthier future together!
